Sami didn’t know how to respond to Joey’s words. The more she thought about it, the more she realized she didn’t miss Texas very much either, at least not since she’d met Joey. But somehow she couldn’t open her mouth to tell him so. When he smiled at her - that dazzling, crooked, amazing smile that had become her favourite thing about him - and placed his warm hand on hers, she wanted nothing more than to kiss him… Wait! She didn’t really want to kiss him, did she? That would be moving too fast. Jumping into things, like last time. Sami was afraid, but she really did want to kiss him. Or him to kiss her. That was it! She would wait until he kissed her. The way she wouldn’t be jumping into things, right? Sami bit her lip thoughtfully, trying not to stare too obviously at Joey’s mouth.
Oh, gosh, Sami thought as he began to lean in. He’s going to kiss me. She automatically began to lean in as well. For a second she almost panicked as an unwanted memory surfaced in her mind, a hazy recollection of the last guy she’d kissed - the only guy she’d ever kissed before - and, with it, a flood of memories of the problems that that night had caused. Sami might have freaked out, might have pulled back and told Joey that she just wasn’t ready, but then his lips met hers and she snapped back into reality, into here and now, into the swirl of once-foreign emotions that were now becoming so familiar to her. She felt a tug in her gut, and she automatically moved closer to Joey, placing a hand gently on the side of his cheek. This. This was a kiss. This was the kiss she could tell people about, the kiss she would say was her first. Besides, that other time… That hardly counted, right? It hadn’t felt remotely like this. Because this… This was fireworks. This was magic. This was perfect.
